Vault Delver: Material Mastering, Part 1

Even though I called this part “Material Mastering”, it is more a learning process. I believe I have finally arrived at the starting line when it comes to making proper materials in Quixel Mixer.

Why do I even use Quixel Mixer instead of the more talked about Substance Painter? mostly because I have been using the Quixel toolset since it began, or close too when it began. I never became any good with it but I bought it and I have been trying to stick with it since. They have made great tools. and I will probably never start using anything else.

I followed the “5 minute tutorial” made by Quixel them selves. It is quite fast and I had to import my own materials from Textures.com to fill in some of the blanks. I am pretty certain I have access to a more comprehensive library through Epic, but I don’t really what to mess with that since I am doing a Unity game and not an Unreal game.

Anyways, I followed the tutorial a bit and ended up making this material above. It looks pretty okay. I have played around with it a little before when making the military crate. But with the 5min tutorial I could fill in some blanks in my knowlage and make something that I am quite happy with. It is not perfect but it works. I even a quick export to Unity to test how it looks.

Tile material on existing floor pieces.

It looks a bit off, since it is only applied directly to the existing floor pieces abut it is a nice indicator of how it looks. I need to try to make tutorials about it later. In text form since I, personally, don’t like the video format when working with more technical things.
